Over the Carpathians

The most beautiful roads in Romania

Tour details

TOUR description

This trip will take you on the most beautiful roads Romania has, built over the Carpathians: Transfagarasan Highway and Transalpina Road. Jeremy Clarkson from BBC’s Top Gear show said that Transfagarasan is the best road in the world; others argue that Transalpina is the most impressive. Which one is the most spectacular, is up to you to decide, after this two days tour.
We’ll start our trip in Sibiu, heading south to Wallachia using Transalpina Road, the highest road in Romania with a maximum altitude of 2.145m. Some sources say that the original route was built by the Roman legions during the wars with the Dacians, but it’s clear that Transalpina Road was rebuilt during the interwar period and opened in 1938, when it was inaugurated by King Charles II and some years later the road was rehabilitated by the German troops during the Second World War for military reasons, but remained inaccessible for most normal drivers and vehicles until only a few years ago. Arrived in Wallachia (Oltenia) we’ll have the chance to visit some of the beautiful orthodox monasteries of northern Oltenia, like Tismana, Polovragi, Bistrita, Hurezi or Dintr-un Lemn (One Wood Monastery). Especialy Hurezi ( or Horezu ) monastery worth a visit, being a pure example of Romanian religious architecture. More than that, we can stop at the Polovragi Cave (one of the longest in Romania) or Bat’s Cave in Bistrita for a breath taking view of the Bistrita Gorges.
We’ll start the next day with a visit to Curtea de Arges Monastery, a place so rich in legends and history, where the first king of Romania, Carol I is buried. On our way to Transylvania we’ll stop at the Poeinari Fortess, the real Dracula castle, and then, after passing over Vidraru Dam we’ll enter Transfagarasan, for 90 kilometers of twists and turns laid over the Carpathians, spectacular waterfalls, scary ravines, steep rocky walls will take your breath away. We’ll end the day with a stroll in Sibiu or short tour of the rural area of Marginimea Sibiului.
